In the 14th century, a wave of sallets swept through Europe to replace their predecessor - the bascinet. Owing to its abundance of portrayals in artwork as well as preserved pieces, it is believed that this helmet was widely used by soldiers throughout all corners of the European continent, predominantly in Germany.

The particular version of these helmets featured back tails but no visors; making it ideal for infantrymen or mercenaries who needed versatile headgear while they made their way across battlefields during mid-15th century warfare when kettle hats also flourished as protection from enemies' blows alike.
